Aeternum VTT: a homebrew virtual tabletop

A tabletop for your homebrew campaigns.

Make your own classes, creatures and equipment, then try them in a game with friends. Aeternum supports D&D 5e, with Plotweaver in open alpha and Aeternum Tactics in preview. Character sheets calculate their own numbers, and dice roll from the sheet. Upload a battlemap and use OBJ, STL or GLB models for tokens and props. Your group joins in a browser without installing anything or hosting a server.

Bring a homebrew idea to our Discord community to share a draft, ask for feedback or find people to playtest it with.

Free accounts are open during early access. Paid plans are coming soon: Plus is $5/month or $50/year, and Pro is $10/month or $100/year. Your plan is the same whether you run the game or play in it.

What you can run at the table

Make D&D classes, species, feats and equipment in the Compendium, or import your own content packs. Build a character and test your ideas in a session. D&D library characters can use Add to campaign to join another compatible table with the same saved build.

  • Computed character sheets with dice that roll from attacks, skills, and saves
  • 3D battlemaps with fog of war, tokens, and OBJ / STL / GLB props
  • 2014 and 2024 D&D 5e rule sets, chosen per campaign
  • Email invites for players and co-GMs; Campaign Hub with role and game-system filters
  • Journal, handouts, encounters, and a global slide-in session panel
  • Character JSON import/export and a user-level character library
  • Table and board display links for a second screen during live play

GMs invite players or co-GMs by email. Accept or decline invites in Campaign Hub, then use its role and game-system filters to find the table you want. Table and board display links put the map on a second screen during a live session. Signed-in users can open support tickets in the app, and anyone can reach Support for assistance. D&D campaigns choose the 2014 or 2024 rule set.

Rules content and attribution

The bundled D&D reference content comes from the 5th Edition Systems Reference Document (SRD). The product isn't affiliated with Wizards of the Coast. The official text is on the Wizards Systems Reference Document page, and community mirrors like open5e.com carry it too. Why it works this way

The upgrade path sells room, not tools. Free is a real table with maps, characters, sessions, and the compendium. The table is hosted for you, so nobody in your group runs a server. The board is the browser, and Plus and Pro add a phone companion for HP, scores, and dice. It doesn't replace the board.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aeternum VTT free to use?

Yes. Free accounts are open during early access, with campaign, player, scene and storage limits. Paid plans are coming soon: Plus is $5/month or $50/year, and Pro is $10/month or $100/year. Your plan is the same whether you run the game or play in it.

Do I need to download or host anything?

No. This virtual tabletop runs in the browser. Players join from a browser tab, and nobody in the group installs a client or runs a server. Upload battlemaps and place OBJ, STL, or GLB models as tokens and props.

Is Aeternum affiliated with Wizards of the Coast?

No. Bundled D&D reference content comes from the 5th Edition Systems Reference Document (SRD). Campaigns can use the 2014 or 2024 rule set. Aeternum is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.

What is the phone companion on Plus and Pro?

Plus and Pro add a phone companion for HP, ability scores, and dice during a live session. It is not a mobile version of the battle map — the board stays in the browser.

How do players join a campaign?

GMs invite players or co-GMs by email. Pending invites appear in the hub, where you accept or decline. Use its role and game-system filters to find your campaign.
